What is TRAC?

30+ Years of Research.

20+ Years of Coaching.

5,000 Lives Examined.

4 Development Needs.

1 Assessment.

TRAC is a personal development tool that provides a current snapshot of where a person is and what their current needs are in their development.

How was TRAC Developed?

The groundwork for TRAC was laid over 30 years ago through the research of Dr. J. Robert Clinton, the author of The Making of a Leader. Dr. Clinton spent his life researching and examining how people are developed throughout their lives. Out of his research came one startling conclusion:

Only 1 out of 3 leaders finish well.

From his research, Dr. Clinton was able to identify 4 key areas of personal development that influence whether or not leaders finish well:

  • Trajectory

  • Replinishment

  • Awareness

  • Choices

TRAC provides a snapshot of an individual's current needs so that they do not become stuck or plateau in their development.

Dr. Clinton’s research was then developed by his protege, student, and friend, Dr. Terry Walling, President and Founder of Leader Breakthru. Dr. Walling applied and adapted Dr. Clinton’s research by developing and applying the TRAC assessment through over 30 years of one-on-one coaching.

Research reveals three common characteristics of leaders that finish well:

  1. They are intentional in their personal development.

  2. The experience times of repeated renewal.

  3. They are committed to gaining the help of a coach or mentor.

TRAC assesses four key areas of personal development:

  • Trajectory

Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes but when we look back everything is different.”

    C.S. Lewis

Developing a "big picture perspective" is essential for personal growth and life direction. This approach involves reflecting on your past experiences—including the people, places, events, and circumstances that have shaped you—to gain insights into your future path. By examining these elements, you can better answer the question: "Where am I heading, based on where I've been?" This process of self-reflection and understanding your life's trajectory is most effective when done collaboratively, often with the guidance of a coach. Together, you can uncover patterns, identify key influences, and gain clarity on your personal development journey. This comprehensive view of your life creates a solid foundation for moving forward, helping you make informed decisions about your future that align with your personal history and growth.

  • Replenishment

“It is easier to do–it is more important to be.”

    Terry Walling.

Replenishment, the act of restoring oneself to a complete or former condition, is crucial for maintaining a focused and intentional life—a key aspect of achieving congruency. Without established routines for rest and recharging, the daily demands of life can deplete our energy and limit our ability to support others. Importantly, the extent of our influence on others is closely linked to the depth of our personal relationships and self-care. By prioritizing replenishment, we ensure that we have the resources to navigate life's challenges and positively impact those around us.

  • Awareness

“Leaders know who they are, and more importantly, who they are not.”

    Edwin Freedman

Edwin Friedman defines leaders as "self-defined people with a non-anxious presence," highlighting the importance of self-awareness in leadership and personal congruency. The journey to congruency begins with discovering one's authentic identity through self-reflection. This process leads to self-definition and self-differentiation, enabling individuals to maintain composure in challenging situations. By understanding themselves deeply, leaders can uncover their unique calling, clarify their contributions, and achieve congruency between their inner selves and outward actions. This alignment enhances personal fulfillment and leadership effectiveness, fostering authenticity and trust in others.

  • Choices

“We don’t believe something by merely saying we believe it, or even when we believe that we believe it. We believe something when we act as if it were true.”

    Dallas Willard

Coaching is fundamentally about empowering others to take action and making choices that shape our life's direction. The path to congruency—aligning who we are with what we do—is marked by numerous decisions, some of which may be challenging and push us out of our comfort zones. These choices determine how well our actions reflect our true selves. As we navigate this journey, often venturing into unfamiliar territory, a Congruency Coach serves as a supportive partner. They commit to guiding and accompanying you through the decision-making process, helping you face uncertainties and make choices that lead to greater alignment between your inner self and outward actions.
